A Grandfather Clock and You and Your Home

By: Richard Blackmon

Moving into a new house is always stressful. I know, because I have moved 14 times in my adult lifetime. Unpacking box after box of wrapped china and neatly folded clothes leave you drained. You anticipate treasures being broken, lost or stolen. The stress builds as you begin to get a feeling of urgency to get this task completed. Before the feeling of newness and exhaustion gets to you, set up your old, comforting furniture and let the chimes of your grandfather clock soothe away the stress. This works for me.

Brighten A Corner Without Burning Your Pockets

You do have a grandfather clock, don't you? If you not, this would be a great time to invest in one. It is an investment not just a mere purchase of a piece of furniture. Along with your couch and dining set, a long case clock is one of the most important pieces furniture that families need in their homes. The warmth and elegance it brings into an otherwise plain room makes it a must-have for homeowners.

Why settle for a house that’s simple and bare when you can make it elegant and comfortable at the same time? You don’t have to spend a fortune for this magnificent transformation to happen. Our clock, purchased at a factory in North Carolina, cost about $800. You don’t even need to live in a mansion in Beverly Hills (We certainly don't, just a single story home in Texas.) just to fit in the clock with your existing furniture.

While it’s true that antique tall clocks from established companies are sold at stiff prices, there are newer models that look as exquisite without costing as much. Turn your living room into an inviting parlor by purchasing an impressive grandfather clock for less than $300. You’ll be getting real value for your hard-earned money. The beautiful artisanship and the durability of the timepiece are worth the expense.

Choosing The Right Piece

Whether you’re on a three hundred or three thousand dollar budget, you will not run out of choices. These clocks come in various designs and wood finishes. Choosing one takes time, as all these designs are elegant and remarkable in their own light. You’ll want them all.

Here’s good advice to follow when shopping for your very own grandfather clock. Be prepared to spend time choosing the right clock. There are several beautiful items, but you’ll want the best your budget can afford. When you see the right clock, you will know it. It calls out to you.

Choose one as you would a future husband or a wife. Carefully inspect the design and narrow down your options into your top few choices.

Now imagine each one in your living room, entry hallway or wherever you decide to place it and try to get the feel how it would blend with your existing furniture. If this does not prove promising, take in the form and structure of the timepiece. Be sure to listen to the chims several times. Clocks of the same make and model can and will sound differently. Never rush the process of choosing. Always remember that a grandfather clock is a personal thing, so settle for the one you are most attracted to and one you imagine yourself being happy with for the rest of your life.

Buy an Antique, Get Yourself a Smart Investment

If you are willing to go all out with a grandfather clock, choose an antique piece from a well-known brand. Authentic antiques run on the thousands and rightly so with their elegant design and old world luster. The luxurious feel cannot be replicated elsewhere.

You might be amazed to discover that these expensive timepieces sell quickly no matter the time of year. Collectors all over the world are always on the lookout for a big catch. Be money smart while decorating your home and get a good old antique timepiece. Who knows? You might just make a fortune from it in the future, but I am betting you will never get rid of it once it is in your home. It makes a fine heirloom to pass on to your loved ones.

I love all manner of clocks but I especially love grandfather clocks. Antique clocks are also an attraction. When I lie awake at night, there is something comforting about the chiming of my grandfather clock.
