Fighting the iPhone - Samsung and Sony Ericsson mega-phones on their way!

With the launch of the iPhone 2 due any day soon, the big manufacturers are ramping up their development on new super-powered mobile phones built to take it on and beat it at its own game. Today, I focus on two of the biggest, Samsung and Sony Ericsson.
There are some things set the iPhone apart from its competitors, in the business of mobile phones. First is the full touchscreen interface, something that HAS been seen on other devices, but never this slick, before. But more important than the screen itself is what's inside, and it's here where fans of the iPhone tell us that it gets one over on its competitors. To put it bluntly, the iPhone has the slickest user interface ever seen, one that is a joy to use, on top of being awesomely powerful. It's a great combination, and one that really sets it apart.
Well, it did until recently, because the fact is, the leading manufacturers of mobile phones (try saying that if you're drunk) are on the offensive, and very soon, we'll be getting their OWN touchscreen devices, designed to beat the iPhone. Actually, it's already started, with news of the awesome Samsung i900.

Let's look at the outside bits of the Samsung i900, before we get into the specifics of its innards. It's pretty obvious that it's heavily influenced by the iPhone, but that's no bad thing. You get a groovy, huge touchscreen, and the body is made mostly of metal, something that really gives it a sexy look, and makes it look absolutely jaw-dropping. The screen is massive and bright, and to be frank, it's one of the sexiest mobile phones I've laid eyes on. Inside the Samsung i900, it gets even mroe high-end, as it's based on Windows Mobile 6.1 Pro, making it truly powerful, and a custom interface, making it slick! You also have a 5 megapixel camera, god knows how many media options, and a huge 8Gb of memory to store everything on!
In summary, then, it's taking on the iPhone in a big way. But how about that other bastion of the mobile world, Sony Ericsson?

Samsung have got the i900 as their ultimate weapon, but Sony Ericsson have potentially got something even more mind-blowing up their sleeves. However, the thing is... nobody knows what it will be! I mean, it doesn't even have a codename yet, but we can piece together the clues and do some quick thinking to work out what we'll be getting. The first hint is that Sony Ericsson displayed a new version of the UIQ operating system a while back, that was quite obviously influenced by the iPhone. Second hint: a Sony Ericsson product video recently showed TWO unheard-of mobile phones, with no name and no insignia... but they DID say to watch out for them, as they will be coming out later this year. Add that to the fact that we have an entirely new series of phones from Sony Ericsson, the Xperia line, designed to bring the user unique experiences, and I think it's very clear that something absolutely amazing is going to be announced by Sony Ericsson, soon!
